Bumblebee Walking Toads (Melanophryniscus klappenbachi) are small, colorful toads that make excellent pets. In regards to diet, they are very similar to dart frogs, with fruit flies dusted with Repashy Calcium Plus being the staple feeder. Once or twice a month the flies are dusted with Repashy Vitamin A Plus. They can also be fed small feeders such as micro bsfl, rice flour beetle larva, or pinhead crickets. However, in terms of housing, they should be kept more like typical toads with one end of the enclosure on the drier side, one end moist, and considerable ventilation. I keep a very shallow water dish that I often see the toad sitting in for a brief soak.  My temperatures are down to the low 60s(F) in winter and mid-70s(F) in summer. The toads will climb on low vegetation but are not avid climbers so an extremely tall cage is not needed. 

Breeding takes place in early spring. The males can be heard calling from or hiding between terrarium plants when they are breeding age. I moved the toads to a plastic box that drips recirculated water to simulate rainfall.. The water is only a couple of inches deep and they have aquatic plants and corkbark to climb onto. The toads begin calling much more frequently and eggs are laid shortly thereafter. Once it appears all the eggs have been laid, I moved the adults back to their terrarium and raise the tadpoles inside the box feeding spirulina and Repashy Solient Green. Twenty-four hours after metamorphosis, I move the toadlets to a terrestrial setup where they are fed springtails and stunted fruit flies.
