I am most familiar with kingsnakes from Missouri. The speckled kingsnake is a very, very common snakes there. I have found them most adundantly under flat objects in open areas. I have also found them in holes in the ground and rarely inside trees. Flat rocks, boards, and tins are favored hiding places. Some objects nearly always had a speckled kingsnake under them. The prairie kingsnake is found in similar settings. It is also a fairly common snake there.
