Mount Monadock in southern New Hampshire is said to be one of the most hiked mountains in the country. The most common route taken is to drive to the Headquarters and hike from there. You will need advance reservations so be sure to purchase them before heading to the park. I was initially interested because it is a relatively short hike with good views. Given that it is well known and busy, it is best to go early and on weekdays.
As far as mountains go, the hike from the headquarters is not a difficult hike. However, if you're used to hiking on flat land, the incline will certainly be noticed as you go up and you can expect a solid cardio workout. There are a couple of places that are fairly steep and you'll probably use your hands to help walk over the rocks, but there's nothing on the trail that would be considered climbing. Keep in mind you will be walking over rocks which can be slick when wet, so wear good shoes, go slow, and if you get fatigued while hiking up, take a break! Although the trail is steep, it's not very long. There is quite a bit of space above treeline, so you'll have good views of the surrounding area. If you're looking for a relatively short but still physically involved hike and good views, I think you'll be happy with this hike.
